The Employment Skills Center offers one-to-one and small group instruction in the BASIC SKILLS area of reading and writing.

Classes are offered year round with open enrollment. Various teaching techniques are used with an emphasis on multi-sensory learning. This program is designed for low level and beginner readers who are interested in improving their reading and writing skills.

One-on-one tutoring is available to learners who can not attend the scheduled classes. Specific needs can be addressed such as; filling out job applications, understanding school papers that your children bring home, understanding health forms, and much more!

Upon entrance learners will be assessed and goals will be set. These goals will be closely monitored throughout the program and a post-assessment will be conducted upon exit of the program.

Testimonials

"I started classes at The Employment Skills Center in July of 2006. I enjoy coming to the The Employment Skills Center because it gets me out of the house and I get to meet new friends. I wanted to learn to read and write many years ago but I didnt know of any programs in the area. My caseworker told me about The Employment Skills Center. I work from 5:00-7:00 p.m. so I can attend my classes in the morning. My teacher, Dotty, makes little booklets for us and I read them to my sister. My sister says that she has seen a big improvement in my reading skills. I would tell all of my friends who have trouble reading and writing to come to The Employment Skills Center!"

"I came to The Employment Skills Center about 2 and ½ years ago. In school I was never taught how to read. I would get by with just pretending to know how to read. One day I was with a friend for lunch and he noticed that I was holding the menu upside down. I felt embarrassed. Shortly after that my wife came across an ad for literacy in the phone book. She asked me if I would like to learn how to read and I said that I would.

I came to The Employment Skills Center and met with Margi to discuss the program. I began attending classes immediately! My life has changed. I now know how to read. I can sound out words and understand their meanings. In church I can read some of the words of songs that are displayed on the big screen. This means a lot to me! I still have a long way to go, but I am going to do it!"
